Information is the currency of democracy

Over the past 18 months we have proven our worth to the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) - a non-departmental independent regulatory public body which reports directly to the Parliament office dealing with Data Protection.

As the name suggests, the information they send us for translation is highly confidential and a good deal of trust is placed in our capable hands. We have security processes in place when working with bodies such as the ICO including signed confidentiality agreements (on both sides), secure data transfer and a fully vetted and trustworthy team.

Every year the ICO produce their Annual Report Summary which goes into detail about their overall mission, end goals, year overview achievements and financial figures. This 52 page, professionally designed and printed report, as with most ICO material, also needs translating for its’ Welsh audience.

How we answered the brief

We have provided Welsh translations for various document types since starting work with the ICO. This, however is the first time we were asked to translate their flagship document of the year. Using two of our most experienced Welsh language professionals, one for translation, the other for proofreading, a total of 6,500 words were turned round in under 4 days.

As well as translating the report into Welsh, we were also asked to provide a Welsh version of the Annual Report artwork, typeset and ready for print. In the first instance,  the ICO’s design agency provided us with the original Indesign artwork and accompanying high resolution images and vector files. From these files we were able to fully strip out the entire copy and place it in a clear to understand table format showing the source English copy on the left and space for the Welsh target translation on the right. This made it very easy for our independent typesetters to flow the translated copy back from Word format into the source artwork.

The results

What came back from our  translators was a first class, fully proof read and proof checked translation. Using our past experience working with the ICO, we were able to provide a document that was written in just the right tone and consistent in voice and style with that of previous Welsh translations.

Then our  typesetters finalise the accurate Welsh version of the Annual Report artwork, ready for lithographic or digital print, as a high resolution, press optimised PDF. The document retained all original artwork features, remaining on-brand and consistent throughout.
